Stuffing boxes need routine maintenance to prevent damage to the propeller shaft. Most properly tightened stuffing boxes will drip noticeably (more than 5 to 10 drops per minute) only when the shaft is turning. If you have excessive dripping & the gland nut is tight, it's time for new packing. When inspecting the stuffing box it should feel cool or just barely warm to the touch - indicating that the packing is not overheating. If it feels hot, the packing nut is too tight, the packing nut has been tightened too many times or the packing is worn out.
